New Taste Tuesday – Tanghulu

It’s Tuesday, which means it’s… New Taste Tuesday! That day of the week where we experiment with food and try something new. This week, I wanted to attempt making Tanghulu. I see people make it all the time on TikTok so how hard can it really be?

Now, have you ever heard of Tanghulu? If not, it’s a delicious and unique Chinese treat that will 100% satisfy your sweet tooth!

Tanghulu is a traditional Chinese snack made by skewering fruits, typically berries, on bamboo sticks and coating them in a sticky, sugary syrup. The end result is a beautiful and shiny fruit skewer that is not only visually appealing but also incredibly tasty. The crispy, sweet outer layer of the Tanghulu contrasts perfectly with the tartness of the fruit inside, creating a delightful explosion of flavors. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and sour! Tanghulu is not only a popular street food in China, but it has also gained popularity in other parts of the world, thanks to its irresistible taste and eye-catching appearance.

Personally, I find it kind of reminded me of Candy Apples, or at least the idea of it! Fruit coated in a hard candy shell. I think it’s actually is the same thing just without the red food colouring. I’ve never tried making it before though, but I’ve been craving something sweet, so why not give it a try!

It was actually way easier to make than I thought it would be! If you want to try it for yourself, here’s the recipe:

  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • Berries – your choice
  • Skewers

Make sure the water is completely covering the sugar but don’t mix it!! Bring it to a boil on in a pan on med-high heat. Once the sugar and water mix is slightly browned, dip in your fruit skewer, coat the fruit then immediately place in ice bath. Voila, you did it!

I thought it was really, really good!! It’s a quick, easy snack that I think I’ll actually make more. It’s perfect for family or friend gatherings, especially during the summer! It’s something easy that will make you look like a master in the kitchen…

If you’re looking to try something new and exciting, I highly recommend giving Tanghulu a try. Trust me, once you take that first bite, you’ll be hooked!
