Easy Method For Keeping Flies Out of The House

I can’t be the only one who is sick of the flies taking up residence in my home. If they’re not going to pay rent or help with chores then I have no time for them. Fly traps somewhat work, but there is a different and better smelling method to try which seems to at least limit the amount from making their way inside.

Apparently flies don’t like the smell of cinnamon or vanilla. Thought this would attract them, but cinnamon contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde, which is toxic to flies and other insects, but safe for humans and pets. Vanilla extract makes me thinking of baking cookies and not deterring flies, but insects seem to hate vanilla. Make sure it’s pure vanilla extract, no sugar. Your local health food store should carry it.

The mixture is quick and simple. Mix 250ml of water, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract into a spray bottle, shake it up and spray the windows and doors on the outside of your home. You can also spray it in the interior as the mixture isn’t harmful and won’t ruin any surfaces, plus your home will smell good! Fruit fly season is coming up too, so this should help keep those at bay as well.
